We all know basic water hydrates us, but did you know there are more optimal ways to stay hydrated? As the weather gets increasingly hotter, it’s important to stay hydrated so we can avoid becoming light headed or suffer heat stroke. Here are 3 ways to optimize your hydration this summer!
1
Add to your Water
Human brains need proper hydration to function, and even more when it’s hot out and we lose essential electrolytes through sweat. Make drinking water more interesting and more hydrating by…
2
Limit Caffeine and Alcohol
Although a nice iced coffee or cold beer during a gathering is fun, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages can contribute to dehydration. Being mindful to avoid excessive consumption during particularly hot days is important, as they can increase fluid loss.
I suggest
pre-hydrating before activities, especially outdoor ones. This will minimize the likelihood of getting overly dehydrated whether or not you’re consuming any amount of caffeine or alcohol. Taking a moment to consider how you can best hydrate yourself before plans will keep you feeling energized, replenished, and headache-free for the day!
3
Seek Shade and Cool Spaces
Taking advantage of the sunny days is something we all do during the summertime. As we get wrapped up in plans and activities, we may start to feel the effects of too much time spent in the heat. During these hot days, it’s important to take breaks from the sun and relax in shaded or cool places like shops or nearby grocery stores that will likely have AC.
Find some relief by also setting hydration reminders on your apps, or take the old fashion way and write it on your hand – either way, the reminder will make sure you’re prioritizing your hydration this summer!
